Sokha Hotel Co., Ltd, under the esteemed leadership of Dr. Sok Kong, has been granted in principle permission from the Royal Government of Cambodia for their latest groundbreaking project in a letter dated September 1, 2022, from the Office of the Council of Ministers (No. 730), and another letter dated September 8, 2022, from the Ministry of Environment (No. 1580 S.), the company has been officially confirmed to embark on a monumental endeavor to build a magnificent 108-meter-high Buddha statue on the breathtaking ridge of Bokor Mountain. This awe-inspiring project will be nestled within the enchanting five hundred rice fields of Monivong Bokor National Park. The statue will be designed in the rich Khmer Empire style and will follow the national and international disciplines of the Ministry of Religion of Cambodia.
The project is to build the largest and tallest Buddha statue in Cambodia, and one of the tallest in the world. It will be in the form of the Maravijaya Buddha, or the Buddha defeating Mara, in the Bayon style, which was the supreme style of Buddhism during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the 13th century. The statue will be made of golden amber concrete, 108 meters high from the ground floor to the top of the Molei, which represents the 108 blessings of the Buddha, who will sit on a circular lotus pedestal (Wat Sangkha), which is modeled after a part of the Diamond Pillar of the Kramen style from the 9th century.On the first floor, there will be a porch in front of the shrine or front porch for worship celebrity, and inside the shrine will be seven Buddha statues and five bodhisattvas, for a total of 12 (representing the 12 months of the year) sitting in Bosbok surrounded by 8 large Buddha Statues (representing the eight directions and the eight Noble Paths) leading up to the largest Buddha Statue.
Overall, the project to build this Buddha statue is to preserve the national identity of religious culture based on the preservation of the old and new in the Techo era, peace and development in all areas, and this Buddha statue will remain as a national cultural and religious property, the generations for the great shrines of all Buddhists forever. The construction of the statue took about four years and cost about 30 million US dollars.
